GraFX put online the FREE - Star Rating System

Gregory Boshoff originally wrote this PHP script some time ago specifically for Developers Resources. We have since updated and adapted it for more general usage based on "Fast Template". It should work with both static and dynamic database driven Web sites.

The script then query's the database column Item; in order to verify if a record for the requested Web page already exists. If the query does not return a database record. The script assumes that it is dealing with a new Web page, which has not yet been rated and creates a new database record accordingly. A HTML rating form is then automatically generated by the script to enable the Web sites users to execute there ratings.

If the requested Web page has already been previously rated the script calculates and display's the Web pages current rating. I have used a while loop to output the star graphic(s) rating. As this is a lot less hassle than creating a set of different graphics. Apon successfully rating a Web page. The script automatically creates a unique cookie, and logs the IP address of the most recent user to rate a Web page to the database. In order to try and prevent users abusing the system. By carrying out multiple ratings of the same Web page. A message informing the user that they have previously rated the Web page is then subsequently displayed in place of the rating select box HTML form element.
